Finding Nemo

It took two driving days to get to Sturgis and then to a camping ground about 17 miles outside of the city proper. This took a bit of winding roads to get there but wielding the beast and the trailered bike were not on my mind. It was the curvy roads getting into the campsite. Along the way, packs of bikers were heading down through the curves leaving nothing but their throaty sound and the pings of jealousy inside me. But soon. Soon.

We got our RV's parked in their respective spots. But not without a little notice from the Owner/Manager who beheld the "Scotty" and exclaimed to Clark "Who's is that!". At first it was thought we broke a little biker protocol and were now sentenced to exile from our sweet oasis. But it turned out that Troy (Manager) also was in possession of a "Scotty" RV. This vehicle is turning into a regular conversation starter. Troy was not going to allow this situation to go without response, so he disappeared, then 25 minutes later an older, more seasoned "Scotty" drove up. He had done some neat modifications at which we toured each other’s RV's.

Settle in, and with Greg and John now at camp from their drive from Colorado, we had nothing to do but wait for tomorrow while quaffing beers and pulling on a Cigar or two. Tomorrow is the great baptism at the biker mecca.

The Bike

OK, so I have a new motorcycle to accompany the BMW already owned. But, what would people say if I showed up without the quintessential american bike. I had to get it operational for what would be several days of riding in Sturgis. I was able to get it started, after some battery recharging, but the thing ran so rich (or lean), I could only assume the carberator needed some cleaning and the gas needed replacing. I didn't trust riding it out to the shop, so I put it on the trailer and ran the back roads to Meridian. I dropped it off and said "Give a bike I can trust".

I was able to get it back in a few days as of which I had Sandra drop me off with my gear so I could ride it home. From the BMW and the Harley, the Harley is a different feel and it was quite foreign to me in the comfort zone. I'm going the back roads away from traffic. The bike rand fairly well, but had a couple of "coughs" during the stops at the lights. I was writing this off as excess bad gas in the system and maybe some exhaust issues. I'm sure a few rides out will remedy this when I cycle new fuel through it.

Throughout the course of a couple weeks, I did some small rides and the bike was actually starting to feel more natural to me. However, the "coughs" still occurred even after a couple of tank refuels. Ultimately, I found it was running rich on accelleration and lean on idle.

On one ride, I drove it around, got back to home, put down the kickstand and to my surprise the primary case dropped all of it's oil. All of it! Looking down the primary case cover was only being held by one screw (it should be secured with four). It became apparent to me, these were not secured when the service folks had replaced all the fluids. Well, OK, these things happen.

I had them pick the bike up and bring it back with new fluids. I did big test ride and checked the bolts. They appear to hold. The only thing not resolved was the lean "cough" and the bogging on accelleration. I did some research and found that I may have a pilot-jet issue that makes my idle run lean. I ordered the parts and have done a slew of YouTube videos on rebulding the carbaruator when I get back from Sturgis. For now, I did replace the air-fuel mixture screw with one that doesn't require taking the breather cover off. I think I'm becoming a "Wrench".

Sturgis

It was back sometime in June I believe. Sandra, Clark, MiChele and I were at a James Taylor concert. We must've been two burbons and a bag of sweet almonds when Clark mentioned he was going to do Sturgis 2025 this year. Clark said "You should come along". Of course, I was jealous since it's been one of those things I've imagined doing but never threw the throttle down on. I put it on a back burner and periodically whack-a-moled the idea. Then later in June, I called Clark and said "I want to go, but first let me see if I could procure a Harley".

There it was, the motion was put into place and I would eventually purchase the 2001 Harley Davidson Sportser from my sister. She inherited from our fathers estate, and wasn't really sure what she was going to do with it. The bike had not been ridden in nearly 20 years, but had 1500 miles on it. On my fingers, I could count the few times my dad had it out on the road, so I suspected it was going to need a little bit of servicing. Now, I had bike, a date and and RV. This would also require a trailer to get it to South Dakota. Unfortuneately, the floorboard of our utility trailer was more reminesent of the Flintstones barney rubble car. You could litterally put your feet through the floor if not careful. So began the resurrection of the trailer.

My uncle Mike had some extra plywood and was more that willing to get this trailer back into function. So we spent a good day installing a new floor and expoxy painting the new floor. Looking it over; other than a new coat of paint, the tires were the next suspect in the criminal lineup which was easy to pickout. Thus, I'm off to the trailer repair to have new 10plys and the bearings packed. After this was all done, the trailer, RV and Bike were all the pieces in place for the worlds biggest motorcycle rally.

Everything was in place, but am I ready?
